Concord is the state capital and the county seat of Merrimack County, with 43,976 residents at the 2020 census, which makes it the third most populous city in New Hampshire after Manchester and Nashua. The Merrimack River runs northwest to southeast straight through it, the Soucook forms the eastern boundary, and the Contoocook joins the Merrimack up at Penacook.

The State House was completed in 1819 and is the oldest capitol in the country where the legislature still meets in its original chambers. In the early nineteenth century the city ran on furniture making, printing and granite quarrying, and Concord granite ended up in both the State House itself and the Library of Congress. The Abbot and Downing company built the Concord coach here, which turned out to be the vehicle that carried an awful lot of the American West.

Downtown splits into the North End and the South End, and there are four villages besides: Penacook, Concord Heights, East Concord and West Concord. Each of those has its own character and, usefully for us, its own typical lot size.
