A one car garage has less room for error than a bigger build. There is no second bay to absorb a bad decision, so the measurements matter more. These are the four we spend the most time on at the estimate.
Depth before width
Width is fixed by the door and the lot. Depth is where a single bay is won or lost. A few extra feet at the back is what separates a garage that holds a car from one that holds a car, a workbench, the mower and the bikes. It is also the cheapest space in the whole structure, because the foundation and roof are being paid for either way.
The door opening
Vehicles have grown. A door that suited a family car in the eighties is tight against a modern SUV or a pickup with mirrors out, and on a single bay there is nowhere else to put the vehicle if it does not fit. We size the opening around what you actually drive, not around a standard, and it is worth thinking about what you might drive in ten years.
Height you will use later
Extra ceiling height costs very little while the walls are going up and cannot be added afterward at any sensible price. On a single bay it is the difference between storage overhead and no storage at all, and it leaves the door open to a lift or a loft later on.
Whether it could grow
