Where A Custom Build Starts
Start With What Goes Inside, Not With The Outside

Most people arrive with a picture of what the garage should look like. That is a fine way to start a conversation and a poor way to start a design, because the outside is the easiest part to change and the last thing that should be settled.
We ask what is going to live in it first. Not how many cars, but what. A boat on a trailer, a truck with a roof rack, a project car up on stands. Each one sets a dimension, and those fix the footprint, the door openings and the ceiling height.
Then what you will do in there. A workshop needs power, light and room for a bench. Anywhere you will spend a winter afternoon needs insulation, decided while the walls are open rather than five years later.
Settle those and the exterior almost designs itself. That order produces a building that works and happens to look right, rather than one that looks right and is six inches too short for the trailer.

The Decisions
What Custom Actually Means In Practice
Custom is a word that gets used loosely. On a garage it comes down to a handful of concrete choices, and every one of them is cheaper to make now than to change later.
Footprint and bays
Anything from a modest stick and slab structure up to a sprawling four bay workshop with room to store a boat. The number of bays is the obvious decision. The depth behind them is the one people underestimate, because that is where the bench, the storage and the room to walk around a car come from.
Doors and openings
Width, height and how many. A door sized for a family car will not take a trailer or a truck with a rack, and a header is not something you move once it is framed. Some builds want a rear door as well, which turns a bay into a drive-through and changes how the whole structure gets used.
Roof and rooflines
Gable, hip or gambrel, with dormers if the second level is going to be used. The roof does more than anything else to decide whether the finished building reads as part of your property or as something that arrived on a truck, and it also decides how much usable space you get upstairs.
How it meets the house
Siding, trim, window proportion and roof pitch carried across from the existing building. Matching properly costs very little at the drawing stage. Approximating is what makes a well built garage look like an afterthought from the road, and no amount of good framing fixes that afterward.
